Cinema’s Top Voted Style Icons

Style Icons

People often look to the stars of TV and cinema as their style icons and it is easy to see why. Celebrities lead a life of glitz and glamour and many have an impeccable style which is often showcased on the red carpets, on chat shows, in magazines and, of course, on social media. So, who are the celebs that the UK public see as style icons?

The Nation’s Best Dressed Cinema Stars

Women’s cropped trousers retailer, Damart conducted a survey of 2,000 UK participants who voted on who they thought the most stylish actor over the age of 40 was. Here are the results:

  • Dame Helen Mirren 28%
  • Dame Judi Dench 17%
  • Kate Winslet 16%
  • Catherine Zeta-Jones 15%
  • Dame Emma Thompson 15%
  • Daniel Craig 12%
  • Idris Elba 12%
  • Kate Moss 11%
  • Helena Bonham Carter 11%
  • Claudia Winkelman 9%

Here is a closer look at the top 3 contenders to see how their sense of style corresponds with today’s fashion trends.

Dame Helen Mirren

Few actors command as much respect as Dame Helen Mirren, who has had a long and successful career on stage, on TV and in cinema and scooped up dozens of awards in the process. In addition to being one of the greatest and most influential British performers, she is also considered a style icon. On her most recent appearance on The Graham Norton Show, the 76-year-old dazzled fans with her colourful printed dress contrasted with chunky biker boots – this is a combo that is trending and popular with influencers right now.

Dame Judi Dench

Another of the UK’s greatest actresses of all time, Dame Judi Dench is an Academy Award, Tony Award, Golden Globe, Olivier Award and British Academy Film Award winner with her work spanning multiple genres and decades. Dench recently proved that she was also a style icon jumping on the colour blocking trend, which involves combining loud colours for a bold look. This was on display in Vogue’s Hollywood Portfolio where she was rocking a chic, red ankle-length red coat paired with pink heart-shaped sunglasses.

Kate Winslet

Kate Winslet became a Hollywood star following her breakout role in Titanic and has since gone on to become a highly respected and talented performer taking on complex characters. Kate Winslet is also seen as a beauty and fashion icon for many with the 46-year-old adopting a more natural, realistic look in recent times to emphasise natural beauty. In an empowering L’Oreal advert, Winslet removes her makeup and claims that she “doesn’t look like this all the time”. She was also praised for her less glamorous role in HBO’s Mare of Easttown where she displayed a more realistic and relatable character than what you see in Hollywood films.

Damart’s interesting survey shows that many of today’s key fashion trends are shaped by our favourite cinema celebs, but also that style is something that remains with us regardless of our age.
